Palomino Grant Update!

Pachyderm Studios has donated two days of studio time to be added to this grant. Thank you so much!

————————————

Trampled by Turtles and the Homegrown Music Festival are happy to present to you the Palomino Grant—available to musicians in the Twin Ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI.

The award is $5000 to be used in your battle against artistic mediocrity (recording, gear, touring—they’re all fair game). Our friends at the legendary Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls have also donated two days at their studio to the winner as a bonus.

The award winner will also be given the opening slot at the Trampled by Turtles + Jenny Lewis show at Bayfront Park in Duluth on July 8, 2023. To qualify as an individual, you must reside within twenty miles of either Duluth, MN or Superior, WI. To qualify as a band, at least half of your members must reside in that area.

Fit the bill? Complete and submit this application by May 11, 2023.

Thank you for making this little part of the world so beautiful.

Homegrown: Day 1

The first performers at the 25th annual Homegrown Music Festival weren’t alive when the inaugural Homegrown happened in 1999. They weren’t even alive when the 10th Homegrown happened. That’s because the aerialists who make up the Phoenix Flyers are all under the age of 15.

This year’s Homegrown Children’s Music Showcase at Dovetail Café and Marketplace offers an array of performances and activities geared to kids and families. Along with six stage acts, there will be playthings available courtesy of the Duluth Children’s Museum and other entertainment, including balloon twisting and a beanbag toss fundraiser for Bags and Brews, which raises money to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer.

Duluth Mayor Emily Larson will proclaim Homegrown Music Festival Week in the city of Duluth during a 4 p.m. reception at Hoops Brewing. The crew at Hoops is creating another batch of Emily’s Extra IPA for the event. Owner Dave Hoops said the always dank India pale ale will be a special version this year that will be “extra dank.”

Warned of the promised dankness, Mayor Larson did not falter. “That’s risky,” she said, “but I like it.”

The mayor noted the introduction of a ceremonial chalice to last year’s reception is a new tradition she’s excited about.  Larson’s proclamation and remarks will be followed by music at Hoops, Zeitgeist Teatro, Blacklist, Carmody Irish Pub and the traditional New Band Showcase at Pizza Lucé.

2023 Field Guide Artist: Amy Abts

I got involved in the arts by drawing a lot as a kid, then selling pieces door to door for quarters when I was 8. This was in the 80’s obviously. And then i fell into the mime cult. But that’s another story. I admire an artist that is honest and does the work. I admire an artist who is able to stay offline. I admire anyone who creates something and shares it.

People can find me on all the socials, specifically instagram. I got hacked a year ago and lost my account. But if you search #byamyabts a lot will come up. My website is being updated but it’s still up. You can friend request me on facebook. You can buy prints on etsy.

My greatest accomplishment? Hopefully yet to come . . . I don’t know, this is pretty cool. I always get a thrill seeing my work on the cover of a record. Words of wisdom? everyone is on their own path so try not to compare. If you can dream it, do it.
