For some bands, losing a vocalist is a death blow. For Southpaw, it was more of a transformation. “We changed some guitar stuff,” says guitarist Nate Pykkonen, “to try to give the instruments a little bit more of a voice since we don’t have a vocalist doing that.” And the result? “We’re super stoked on it.” With the heavy vocals missing, Pykkonen, guitarist Isaac Smith and drummer Nate Rendulich are a more versatile metal/prog instrumental band. “From brutal metal breakdowns, to tapping and guitar shred, all the way to ambient beautiful chord work,” Pykkonen says, they’ve got something for everyone.
