ILL Fortune
Hunter Fortune, better known as ILL Fortune in the independent hip-hop scene of Minnesota, blasts a nostalgic style of hip-hop while keeping that gritty and raw authenticity that comes with the sounds of the local underground. His roots in horror can be heard throughout his music, along with an edgy sense of humor. Besides writing his own music, ILL Fortune also has an eye on the business aspect of the music world, selling beats to artists all over the world. His most recent album, Midnight Matinée at the Macabre, was released at the end of 2023.
Idle Rose
Laura Idle and Rose Spieler-Sandberg form the folk duo Idle Rose. The pair are based in Ashland and sing an honest, relaxed and sweet style of Americana that ripples and shines like the Chequamegon Bay on a calm, warm summer afternoon. Soft harmonies and simple acoustic guitar drive their original songs, which are playful, uplifting and heartfelt. Idle Rose hosted a regular monthly music series at the Washburn Meditation Center this past winter called the Cozy Craft Concerts. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2021 and can be found on Bandcamp.
Hot Tamale Cosmos
Bigtime national recording stars Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby formed The Highwomen in 2019, scoring several hits including a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Now the Twin Ports has its own women-led supergroup. Hot Tamale Cosmos features five artists that bonded over their love of vocal harmony and deep-cut cover songs. The group features Sonja Martin of Feeding Leroy, Colleen Myhre of Boss Mama & the Jebberhooch, Jen Krussow of the Field Birds and Sugar on the Roof, Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Erin Aldridge of The Smoky Gold, and Jocelyn Mikkelson.
