The members of Black River Revue call their sound “freshwater bluegrass.” Bill Monroe wouldn’t argue. Formed on the shores of Lake Superior, the group released its debut album, Garbage Pickin’, in 2013 and followed it up with two more long players in the next four years. While Black River Revue has gone through some personnel changes, it maintains a big, rambling sound defined by the 80-horsepower vocals of frontman Adam Stariha. The splash of harmonies and wave of strings delivered by lan Kvale on bass, Nate Hynum on mandolin and Tim Leutgeb on banjo keep the whole thing afloat.
