Prior to moving to Duluth in 2023, Mitchell Hancock played in everything from jazz combos to emo bands; currently he’s the bassist for local punk trio Chippy in addition to performing solo on acoustic guitar and vocals as Bigg Iron. The genesis of the project was the ambitious goal of learning every train song ever written, leading to an obsession with the music of folk-bluegrass guitar luminaries Doc Watson and Tony Rice. Bigg Iron’s repertoire is mostly folk tunes from the great American songbook, including the aforementioned train songs, but Hancock also has originals he shares in demo form on his Bandcamp page.
