World Beat Drummers

World Beat Drummers, an ardent group of fourth- and fifth-grade percussionists from Meyers-Wilkins Elementary School, learn and create music in the drumming tradition of West Africa and many other countries. Originating with an after-school program 15 years ago at Nettleton Elementary school, World Beat uses authentic dress, instruments and rhythms. Its performances have been requested by the Minnesota Music Educators Conference, Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra Concerts and at local community events and schools. With support of Principal Elisa Maldonado, students have drummed up a fan following while Teri Akervik and Michelle Bowker lead the group.
