World Beat Drummers

World Beat is a group of 25 students from Myers Wilkins Elementary School who learn and create music in the drumming tradition of West Africa. The drummers are fourth- and fifth-graders who meet once a week for rehearsals after school. World Beat has performed at the Minnesota Music Educators Conference, Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra concerts, Bayfield’s Summer (Mostly) Thursday’s music series, the Oldenburg House and local community events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. The drum leaders are music specialist Teri Akervik and reading interventionist Michelle Bowker.
