Former and current University of Minnesota Duluth students form genre-bending rock band the Elements. The genesis of the group goes back to the UMD dorms in 2014, when guitar player Michael Johnson and bassist Nolan Schmidt formed a friendship around music. They moved into a house together and established a rehearsal space for a carousel of different musicians, eventually bringing in drummer Andrew Larson and guitarist Mitchell Jauhola. The band was launched under the name Viaduct in 2015 and in the autumn of 2017 switched to the Elements to reflect the different music influences, or elements, each member brings. Also considered part of the band, though they don’t perform on stage, are Joey Marolt on sound and light production and Nate Nason on social media.
