Multi-instrumentalists Clifton Nesseth and Paul Sauey formed the duo Pony in 2014 in Minneapolis. Focusing heavily on their vocal harmony work and building their songs around intricate finger-picking textures and Scandinavian-inspired modalities, they released a self-titled EP in 2015. Since then, the sound has evolved to more “maximalist soundscapes,” defined by droning layers of guitars, strings and synth textures undergirding emotionally evocative lyrical imagery. Drummer Aaron Hays joined the band in 2021, Nesseth moved to Duluth in 2022 and the band name has since evolved into Ponyfolk. A full-length album is expected in 2023.
