Homegrown Music Festival 2021 Schedule

Homegrown is almost entirely online this year due to COVID-19. Check back for updates and expect chaos. Organizing a virtual festival gets messy, but below is the best rundown of the week’s events available at the moment. Many of the events are streaming at duluthhomegrown.org/live-stream and is available live and archived on Homegrown’s YouTube channel. Items not streaming through Homegrown are noted in the descriptions.

Sunday, May 2

11am | Unofficial Homegrown Music Festival Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunt organizer Kala Moria calls upon local music fans to make teams and compete in a variety of challenges from shotgunning a beer to picking up garbage. Participants post their accomplishments on the Facebook event page throughout the week and Moria judges, awards points and announces the winner at the end of the festival.

Music on the Homegrown YouTube channel begins with songs for youngsters — some of it by youngsters. The list of performers includes Dan the Monkey Man singing a new song titled “I Got a Good Dog,” Chase and Haven Andersen playing an original jazz composition titled “Green Jim,” the Isolation Band singing “Couch Potato,” Jagger Ripley-Jaakola singing “The Water Song” in a video created by Off the Reservation Productions, and Born Too Late performing an acoustic version of “Rebel Child.” There will also be a clip of Brian Barber’s latest video doodle, Chris Monroe will read from her new book Monkey with a Toolbelt Blasts Off, and WDSE-TV’s Making it Up North provides a segment about the Duluth Music Resource Center. The showcase also includes interviews with students from the local chapter of Beatz by Girls, an electronic music production class taught by Shaunna Heckman. Students Maggie, Margot, Nora and Joslyn will share music.

6pm | Mayor’s Reception – View recorded stream here

Duluth Mayor Emily Larson is expected to read the official mayoral proclamation via the internet this year. Hoops Brewing is releasing a special Homegrown beer — Emily’s Extra IPA — and will screen Homegrown YouTube broadcasts.

6pm | The Local Show Goes Duluth

The Current, Minnesota Public Radio’s Twin Cities-based music station, is changing its programming for Homegrown’s opening night. Brittany Lind, host of The Duluth Local Show is taking over the Minnesota-music-focused program The Local Show to showcase three hours of Duluth tunes. The Current can be heard in Duluth on 104.3 and 90.9 FM.

6pm | Livestreams from 2104

Independent of Homegrown, Rich Narum is presenting livestream concerts from his living room throughout the week. Sunday’s performers are Kaylee Matuszak at 6pm, Bill Flannagan at 7 and Sugar on the Roof at 8. To watch the livestream visit youtube.com/user/duluthiscool.

Homegrown’s stream page and YouTube channel features a collection of music by emerging Duluth bands.

7pm | MN Music Summit Livestream – View recorded stream here

The Minnesota Music Coalition’s 2021 State of Minnesota Music Summit allows musicians, music industry representatives and fans to come together as a statewide community and discuss the state of the industry. The two-day summit features a livestream concert on Sunday from Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth featuring local acts Cory Coffman, Superior Siren and AfroGeode. 7pm | Homegrown Poetry Showcase

Similar to the 2020 Homegrown Poetry Showcase, this year’s event will be a prerecorded program released on YouTube featuring a variety of poets reading short works.

7:30pm | A Short Film Starring Teague Alexy

This Feeling Will Be Over Soon is a short film starring Teague Alexy as a neighborhood busker hustling a living on the streets of Atlantic City when his life takes a sudden and violent turn. In filmmaker Joshua Priestley’s beautifully provocative and powerful imagery, Teague is faced with the harsh reality of starting over as he begins the process of transformation, rebuilding and growth.

Tuesday, May 4

7pm | Crunchy Bunch / Embassy DJ Stream

Our spiritual leaders at the Embassy are planning a livestream from their harborside headquarters, which will include sets by a variety of local DJs. The Crunchy Bunch, remotely connected from a separate location, will fill in the gaps with more music and take calls from the community between Embassy acts. Will be re-streamed live on the Homegrown website.


Wednesday, May 5

5pm | The Local on KUMD

Every week The Local on 103.3 FM KUMD presents two hours of Duluth music. During Homegrown, it will be even more Duluth than usual.

7pm | Homegrown Winter Fiasco Encore

Homegrown’s online Winter Fiasco will be the featured stream on Wednesday. The four hours of online performances, interviews and archival footage was assembled in January. The encore has been trimmed down to showcase the performances only. It features more than 30 local artists, including Mary Bue, the Slamming Doors, Moriah Skye, Breanne Marie & the Front Porch Sinners, Reflectivore, Emily Haavik, Boku Frequency, Lord Montague, Torment, A Band Called Truman, Lyla Abukhodair, Cities Never Sleep, Hannah Rey, Jen West and Monster Mob.


Thursday, May 6

Christine Dean hosts Live from Studio A on 103.3 FM KUMD, featuring live music and an interview segment with Misisispi Mike Wolf.

6pm | SoupB4Soup Livestream from 2104

Held annually on the Thursday night of Homegrown, this event features cooking of soup and hosting of local musicians in the living room of Richard Narum’s estate. Simulcast from 2104, performers in the livestream are Aurora Baer at 6pm, Alex Hecker and Ryann Daisy Swimmer at 7 and New Salty Dog at 8. Will be re-streamed live on the Homegrown website.


Friday, May 7

2pm | Live from Studio A

Christine Dean hosts Live from Studio A on 103.3 FM KUMD, featuring live music and an interview segment with Cyr.

7pm | 2021 Artist Performances

Featuring the first half of this year’s pre-recorded artist performances, Friday night is not to be missed. Two hours of 2021 performances will be streamed on the Homegrown website (also accessible at the Homegrown YouTube channel).


Saturday, May 8

7pm | Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra

The DSSO closes out its season with From Beethoven to Milhaud, performing works by Milad Yousufi, Mozart, Osvaldo Golijov, Darius Milhaud and Beethoven. Will be re-streamed live on the Homegrown website.

9pm | 2021 Artist Performances

The second half of the 2021 artist performances will be streamed on the Homegrown website. Grab a refreshing beverage and enjoy.


Sunday, May 9

1 pm | Charlie Parr Sunday Brunch  

Charlie Parr performs a pre-recorded show from Duluth Cider.

2:30 pm | 2021 Performances Encore

A solid five or six hours of original Homegrown performances from the week, repackaged.

4 pm | Unofficial Homegrown Music Festival Scavenger Hunt Concludes
